          Employment Status:Regular, Exempt, Full Time

          Typical Hours Required:Monday – Friday

          General Description of Work:

          Portland Rescue Mission is looking for a Human Resources Generalist to refine and oversee the legally-defined processes used for all staff recruitment, screening, placement, performance review and termination, while fostering employee excellence and relational warmth throughout this ministry to assure Portland Rescue Mission is a great place to work. Success in this role requires a passion for the work of this ministry, keen discernment of character, and innate attention to detail.

          Equally important, the Generalist provides employee relations and management training support to all ministry supervisors. The Generalist also provides benefits consultation and grievance support for all employees. Success in this role requires a solid understanding of management, strong training skills, and a calming disposition.

          This position administrates the standard HR functions including employee handbook revisions, benefits renewals, personnel record keeping, and employment law compliance.

          This a primary role in cultivating a healthy ministerial culture throughout this ministry of over 80 employees serving at six sites. This position will work closely with the executive team in assuring the key values of this ministry are known and exhibited by the staff.

          Essential Functions

          Shepherding Staff


          • Oversee all aspects of employee recruitment, staff care and termination processes.

          • Monitor and cultivate a staff culture that is rich in the core values of the ministry and is uniform across all ministry sites and job descriptions.

          • Handle employee grievances and sensitive personnel issues in a professional and discreet manner.

          • Coordinate quarterly all-staff events including fall and spring meetings, summer retreat and Christmas party.
            Management Support and Training


          • Provide employee relations support to management as needed.


          • Provide guidance and support to management on employment law including state and federal compliance issues.

          • Facilitate management trainings that happen on a bi-monthly basis for all supervisory staff.
            Administrative Oversight


          • Oversee all aspects of legal compliance with employment law.


          • Administer payroll and benefits programs.

          • Stay up-to-date on all current and emerging compliance issues related to HR, safety, etc.

          • Create, maintain, and ensure compliance with employment policies such as thePRMEmployee Handbook.

          • Manage classification and compensation across the organization.

          • Ensure a safe, harassment-free environment for all employees.
            General Functions


          • Commit to two hours of direct service to the homeless guests or program residents we serve as part of each work week.


          • Participate in some cross-organizational committees as required, including the Safety Committee.

          • Administer new employee orientation, leaves of absence, exit interviews, etc.

          • Conduct investigations of discrimination and harassment complaints, and make recommendations as appropriate.

          • Represent the ministry at employee hearings and investigations as necessary.
            Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


          • College degree in related field or experience equivalent


          • Experience in Staffing, Training, Employee Relations

          • Current employment law knowledge

          • PHR/SPHRcertification preferred

          • Competent speaker, teacher and writer

          • Experience in Microsoft Office software

          • Ability to multi-task

          • Self starter

          • Prompt and thorough in job performance

          • Creative and logical problem solving

          • Demonstrated ability to be a team player
