Correctional Officeris an entry level position for those seeking a career in correctional security. Correctional Officers promote public safety by holding offenders accountable for their actions and by reducing the risks of future criminal behavior. Previous correctional experience is not a requirement for Correctional Officer.
Duties & Responsibilities
Nature of the Work
Correctional Officers are responsible for overseeing adult offenders who have been convicted of a crime and sentenced to serve time in a prison facility. Correctional Officers maintain security and inmate accountability to prevent disturbances, assaults, and escapes. Generally work is in a 24-hour, 7 day a week operation, with night shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime as required.
Most Correctional Officers are employed in 1 of 14 State Department of Corrections prisons, watching over the approximately 14,000 offenders who are incarcerated at any given time.
Correctional officers maintain order within the institution and enforce rules and regulations. Correctional Officers help ensure inmates are orderly and obey rules. Correctional Officers monitor the activities and supervise the work assignments of inmates. Sometimes, officers must search inmates and their living quarters for contraband such as weapons or drugs, settle disputes between inmates, and enforce discipline. Correctional Officers periodically inspect the facilities, checking cells and other areas of the institution for unsanitary conditions, contraband, fire hazards, and any evidence of rule infractions. In addition, they routinely inspect locks, window bars, grilles, doors, and gates for signs of tampering. Officers also inspect mail and visitors for prohibited items.

• High School Diploma, GED, or Bachelor's degree
• 21 Years of Age or Older
• MeetDPSST Physical Standards
• Good Employee Work History
• Have a History of Law Abiding Behavior
• United States Citizen
• No evidence of substance abuse
• Possess a valid driver’s license
• Satisfactory driving record within the last 3 years.
• Possess reading comprehension, report writing and retention abilities
• Proficient using computers
• Satisfactorily pass an ODOC Background Investigation

Applicant’s whose names are added to the list of Correctional Officers, will remain active on the applicant list for twelve months. As vacancies occur, various institutions around the state request these lists. Your name will only appear on hiring lists matching your geographic availability. Hiring lists are pulled as vacancies occur. We are unable to predict vacancies or timelines for recruiting.
Step 4
If hired, you will be required to pass a medical exam in accordance with Oregon Department of Corrections physical requirements.

The incumbent in this position may be required to take a prorated number of furlough days during this biennium, depending on the number of furlough days established, and the date of hire.

Other copies will not be accepted and points will not be awarded.

ODOC does not offer visa sponsorships. Within three days of hire, applicants will be required to complete an I-9 and confirm authorization to work in the United States. Applicants will be subject to a Computerized Criminal History and Motor Vehicles check as well as background investigation. Adverse background information may be grounds for disqualification.
